Contractor P.V.A.
Contractor P.V.A. is a general-purpose adhesive and bonding agent for use in many situations. It can be used neat or diluted as directed. It will adhere to most porous surfaces but not to plastics or rubber. Contractor P.V.A. should only be used in dry conditions.
ADHESIVE APPLICATIONS
Apply Contractor P.V.A. to one surface to be bonded. Clamp the joint and leave until cured. This will take approximately 4 hours under normal conditions. Contractor P.V.A. is a thermoplastic material and is therefore unsuitable for joints that will be put under sustained load. In these situations Durabond Woodworker Adhesive should be used.
PLASTERING APPLICATIONS
Contractor P.V.A. can be used to reduce the suction on porous surfaces. It should be diluted 1 part P.V.A. with 5 parts water as a primer. A second coat should be applied when dry of 3 parts P.V.A. with 1 part water. Plaster should be applied whilst the P.V.A. is still tacky.
Contractor P.V.A. can be used when plastering over glazed tiles and painted surfaces. A neat coat of P.V.A. is applied plastering is commenced whilst the coat is still tacky.
RENDERING APPLICATIONS
For bonding sand cement renders ensure that the surface is clean and sound. Prime with 1 part P.V.A. with 5 parts water and allow to dry. Apply the render. On difficult surfaces such as glazed tiles it is best to apply a slurry of 2 parts sand with 1 part cement gauged with P.V.A. diluted 1:1 with water. This should be brushed on and peaked to form a mechanical key. This method can also be used where renders above 9mm are being applied.
GENERAL BUILDING APPLICATIONS
Dustproofing concrete floors: Apply a coat of Contractor P.V.A. diluted 1 part P.V.A. with 4 parts water. Allow to dry for 8 hours before allowing traffic. This method is satisfactory for domestic situations but should not be used where a wearing surface is required.
Concrete repairs: Contractor P.V.A. can be used in mixes containing sand and cement. In general the more that is used the greater the flexibility and adhesion will be improved. It is always advisable to prime the surfaces with P.V.A. diluted with 5 parts water, which should be allowed to dry. Immediately prior to application of the cement mix a coat of P.V.A. diluted 3 parts P.V.A. with 1 part water should be applied.
PAINTING AND DECORATING
Priming before painting porous surfaces such as new plaster: Contractor P.V.A. diluted 1 part P.V.A. with 5 parts water will reduce suction on subsequent coats.
Fixing Polystyrene sheets and aluminium foil: Contractor P.V.A. can be used neat by applying to the wall or the sheeting. Pressure should be applied to ensure good contact.
