Flexiset
Durabond Flexiset is a cement-based flexible tile adhesive formulated to give greater flexibility and adhesion when fixing low porosity and fully vitrified wall and floor tiles without the need to incorporate an admixture in the adhesive. The adhesive is designed for fixing ceramic tiles and mosaics in external and internal locations including swimming pools. Durabond Flexiset will adhere to a variety of backgrounds such as concrete, cement/sand renders and screeds, heated sub-floors, brick/block work, wood based sheets and boards, gypsum plaster, plasterboard and existing unglazed tiling systems.
PREPARATION
The surface being adhered to must be clean, free from dust, dirt, grease, oil and any other contaminants and must be adequately stable to support the weight of materials being fixed. Ensure that the background's required drying time is allowed to elapse prior to fixing the tiles. Durabond Flexiset can be applied to dry or moist surfaces but moisture sensitive materials must be dry and remain dry after fixing. If fixing to gypsum plaster prime the surface with Durabond Primer (1 part: 3 parts water). Wood based sheets and boards must be structurally stable, rigidly fixed and adequately braced against warping and distortion with the backs and edges sealed as described in the relevant part of BS 5385/EN12004. Prime the boards with Durabond Primer and fix tiles directly with Durabond Flexiset.
Avoid bridging joints with tiles when fixing onto wood based sheets and boards. When tiling on very smooth, dense and impervious surfaces in interior dry locations; the surface should first be primed with Durabond Primer.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
Add Durabond Flexiset to water in a clean bucket. Stir and mix thoroughly to give a consistent, slump free and easily trowelled mortar. Mixing proportions are as follows:
- Approximately 4 parts Durabond Flexiset powder: 1 part water
- A 20kg bag requires approximately 5 to 5.5 litres of water.
- The consistency of the mortar can be adjusted to suit on site conditions and the material being fixed. The adhesive has a working time of approximately 4 hours at 20°C
The mortar should be applied to the surface and then combed through with a suitably notched trowel to give a ribbed mortar bed. The notched trowel used depends on the tile size, the surface being tiled, the profile on the back of the tile and the amount of coverage required. Use a 3mm x 3mm notched trowel for mosaics and thin flat backed wall tiling, a 5mm x 5mm notched trowel for normal wall tiling and an 8mm x 8mm notched trowel for normal floor tiling. Bed the tiles firmly whilst the mortar is moist and soft. The tiles should be fixed within the open time of the applied adhesive and pressed into place with a twisting and sliding action to achieve the required contact. When tiling to walls in dry internal locations the adhesive contact with the back of the tile should be not less than 50%. For tiling to floors all external situations or in wet areas such as showers and swimming pools solid bed fixing must be achieved. Solid bed fixing usually requires the tiles to be buttered immediately prior to placing into the ribbed bed so that, as far as is practicable, no voids are left beneath the tiles.
- The applied mortar has an open time of 30 - 40 minutes at 20°C and 50% relative humidity.
- Apply at temperature above 5°C.
Grouting can take place once the tile bed has hardened sufficiently so that the tiles cannot be moved. For grouting wall tiles Durabond Flexiset should be hard enough after 4 to 8 hours at 20°C depending on the porosity of the tile and the background. When grouting floor tiles the Durabond Flexiset should be hard enough after 24 hours at 20°C to accept foot traffic depending on the porosity of the tile and the background, higher temperatures will shorten and lower temperatures will lengthen these times. The tile joints are usually grouted with the appropriate Durabond Flexible Grout or an epoxy grout.
COVERAGE
From 3 to 8kg per m² depending on the surfaces being fixed and notch pattern used. When fixing deep-keyed tiles etc, additional material may be required for buttering the back profile.
STORAGE CONDITIONS
Durabond Flexiset has a shelf life of 12 months once stored in clean dry conditions away from extremes of temperature.
