Home | Technical Datasheets | Durabond | STD – White Professional Adhesive
Durabond STD - White Adhesive is suitable for fixing floor and wall tiles, quarry tiles, mosaics, natural stone etc. to concrete, cement/sand renders and screeds, blockwork, brickwork, plasterboard and other construction materials.

PREPARATION
Reference should be made to BS 5385/EN 12004 norms regarding the correct method of fixing to various backgrounds. The surface being adhered to must be clean, free from dust, dirt, grease, oil and any other contaminants and must be adequately stable to support the weight of materials being fixed.

Durabond STD - White Professional adhesive can be applied to dry or moist surfaces, e.g. cement and sand, concrete etc. but moisture sensitive surfaces must be dry and remain dry after fixing e.g. gypsum plaster. Gypsum plaster surfaces must be dry, at least 5 weeks old and strong enough to support the weight of the tiling. Ensure that any plaster dust is brushed off. Prime with Durabond Primer, diluted 1 part to 3 parts water and allow to dry. Smooth impervious surfaces in internal locations can be primed with Durabond Primer providing the surface is sound and stable e.g. existing ceramic tiling.

MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
Add Durabond STD adhesive to water in a clean bucket. Stir and mix thoroughly to give a consistent, slump free and easily trowelled adhesive. Mixing proportions are as follows:
  • Approximately 3 1/2 parts powder : 1 part water.
  • (A 20kg bag of Durabond STD White powder requires approximately 5.2 litres of water).
The adhesive is ready for use once mixed and has a pot life of approximately 4 hours at normal temperature (20°C) Open time is approximately 20 mins.

FIXING INSTRUCTIONS
The mortar should be applied to the surface and then combed through with a suitably notched trowel to give a ribbed mortar bed. Use a 3mm x 3mm-notched trowel for mosaics and thin flat backed wall tiling, a 5mm x 5mm-notched trowel for normal wall tiling and an 8mm x 8mm-notched trowel for normal floor tiling. Bed the tiles firmly whilst the adhesive is moist and soft. Deep-keyed floor tiles should be buttered to ensure solid bedding. The position of the tiles can be adjusted for up to 10 minutes after fixing.

Surfaces that are rough or uneven may first be smoothed with a levelling bed of Durabond Rapid Repair mortar followed by a normal application of adhesive.

Light foot traffic can be allowed on the tiles 24 - 48 hours after fixing and full loads after 7 days at normal room temperatures. The adhesive should be applied at temperatures above 5°C.

GROUTING
You may grout as soon as the tile bed is sufficiently set, usually 24 - 48 hours after fixing.

COVERAGE GUIDANCE
This is subject to the type of tiles being bonded and the nature of the substrate. The amounts of Durabond STD - White Adhesive usually required are as follows:
  • 1.4 to 2.3kg/sq metre when fixing flat backed tiles, mosaics, insulation boards etc.
STORAGE CONDITIONS
Durabond STD - White Adhesive has a shelf life of 12 months once stored in clean dry conditions away from extremes of temperature.
