Tile on Timber

Description
Durabond Tile on Timber is a flexible ceramic tile adhesive for fixing tiles directly to timber floors - without the need for priming . Durabond Tile on Timber is formulated for fixing tiles to timber floors providing the background is sound. It can also be used for grouting the floor once the tiles are secure.

Preparation
All floors should be secure and not susceptible to movement. Whilst the adhesive is designed to be flexible and is capable of accommodating movement within the background it is not designed to take repeated movement as might be seen in a floor that has spring caused by joist or board movement or deterioration caused by wood rot. Floors that move should be secured by repacking joists and refixing boards where appropriate. It should be noted that bathroom floors are particularly susceptible to wood rot and care should be taken. In the case of butt jointed boards the gaps between should be filled where necessary with either the adhesive or a water based acrylic sealant. Timber that has been treated with wax or similar polishes should be abraided before work commences to provide an improved key. T&G Boards must be securely fixed to joists and floors of chipboard, plywood and other sheet materials must be installed strictly in accordance with board makers specifications. Always ensure that adequate ventilation is present underneath the timber substrate. Concrete / Sand and Cement Renders / Gypsum Plasters need to be thoroughly cured before application of tiles. Priming is also required in certain instances depending on substrate.

Application
Tile on Timber should be applied with a notched trowel to give a bed thickness sufficient to enable at least an 85% coverage. If the tiles have nibs a greater thickness will be required to achieve 85% coverage.

Once applied the tiles should be firmly pressed into place using a twisting motion. The adhesive has an open time of 20 minutes under normal temperature conditions so tiles should be placed within this time. The curing time of the adhesive is dependent on the loss of moisture. Where large tiles are involved or where time is critical e.g. overnight installation then a curing adhesive should be used such as a cementitious or epoxy adhesive.

Tiles can be grouted with Tile on Timber 24 hours after fixing. Care should be taken to work cleanly as the adhesive has a high polymer content. After the joints have been filled excess adhesive should be removed with a damp cloth. Final finishing should take place using a clean damp cloth. If adhesive dries on tiles it can be removed with Durabond white spirit.

NOTE: Do not use conventional grouts with this adhesive as they will not have the required flexibility.
